From Recycled Materials to a Class Band: Year One’s DT Project

7th July 2026

Over the past few weeks, our Year One class has been on a wonderful creative journey: designing, building, and performing with their very own musical instruments, made entirely from recycled materials.

The project began with inspiration — children tried out different instruments in class to help them decide what to make. They then planned their designs, gathered materials (cups, boxes, milk bottles, elastic bands, and everything in between, kindly sent in by our families), and got to work building and painting their instruments ready for performance.

This week, the class band gave their debut performance — to Reception! It was a joy to see the pride the children took in presenting something they had made themselves, and a lovely way to connect the year groups as we approach the end of term.

The project follows the same reuse, reduce, recycle ethos that runs through much of what we do at Annemount, and is a brilliant example of how design and technology, music and environmental thinking can all come together in one creative, hands-on project. Well done, Year One!
