Why Outdoor Learning Matters in the Early Years

7th October 2026

Ask any early-years teacher what young children need most and “time outdoors” will be near the top of the list. Outdoor learning isn’t just about running off energy, though it does that too. Fresh air, nature and space are genuinely good for how children grow, learn and feel. Here’s why it matters so much in the early years.

It builds healthy, capable bodies

Climbing, running, balancing and digging all develop the strength, coordination and confidence that young bodies need. Outdoor play builds both the big movements running and jumping, and the fine control children will later use to hold a pencil. It’s physical development at its most natural.

Nature is a brilliant teacher

The outdoors is full of real, hands-on learning: watching a seed grow, spotting the seasons change, noticing minibeasts, feeling the weather. These everyday wonders spark curiosity and teach children about the world in a way no worksheet can. Early science, maths and language all come alive outside.

It’s good for wellbeing

Time outdoors is calming. It gives children space to breathe, to be a little louder or a little quieter, and to regulate their emotions. Research consistently links outdoor time with better mood, focus and mental wellbeing and that’s just as true for young children as for the rest of us.

It grows independence and teamwork

Outdoor play invites children to take small, safe risks, solve problems and cooperate, building a den, sharing the space, taking turns. These are exactly the social and emotional skills that help children thrive at school and beyond.

Outdoor learning at Annemount

We’re fortunate to have a beautiful garden in the heart of Hampstead Garden Suburb, and our youngest children even have their own dedicated garden to explore. Time outdoors is woven through the day for nature investigation, sport, team games and the weekly walks our inspectors singled out for praise. It’s one of the things families love most about the school.

Come and see our garden in action. Book a visit and see how we use the outdoors every day.
