How the EYFS Prepares Your Child for School

7th October 2026

If your child is starting nursery or reception, you’ll hear the letters “EYFS” a lot. It stands for the Early Years Foundation Stage, the framework that shapes how children learn from birth to age five. It sounds formal, but at its heart it’s about something simple: helping young children grow, through play, into confident and capable little learners. Here’s what it means for your child.

What the EYFS is

The EYFS is the statutory framework that all nurseries and reception classes in England follow, whether state or independent. It sets out the areas of learning and development children work through, and the standards for their care and welfare. In other words, it’s the shared foundation that gives every child a strong start.

Learning through play

The EYFS is built on a powerful idea: young children learn best through play and hands-on experience, not through sitting still and being taught. Painting, building, singing, exploring the garden, sharing stories, these aren’t breaks from learning, they are the learning. Through them, children develop language, early maths, curiosity and social skills without ever feeling “taught.”

The areas that build the foundations

The framework covers a rounded set of areas, including communication and language, personal and social development, physical development, early literacy and mathematics, understanding the world, and expressive arts. Together they build the building blocks children need for the more formal learning that comes later.

Ready for school and for life

By the time children finish the EYFS, the aim is not just that they can recognise letters and numbers, but that they’re confident, curious and independent, able to concentrate, share, ask questions and have a go. Those qualities matter every bit as much as academic skills when it comes to thriving at school.

We follow the EYFS while keeping our days warm, calm and full of play, making the most of our garden and specialist subjects. It means your child is gently and thoroughly prepared for the next stage without ever losing the joy of the early years.
