“Is my child ready for nursery?” is one of the questions we hear most from parents, and it’s a thoughtful one to ask. Every child develops at their own pace, so readiness is rarely about a birthday. It’s about a handful of gentle signs that your little one is curious about the world beyond home. Here’s what to look for.

They’re curious about other children

You might notice your child watching other children at the park, copying older siblings, or lighting up in the company of others. An interest in playing near — and eventually alongside — other children is one of the clearest signs that nursery could be a happy next step.

They can manage short separations

Being able to spend a little time apart from you, whether with a grandparent or a familiar friend, suggests your child is building the confidence that nursery gently develops further. It’s completely normal for there to be tears at first — settling in is a process, and a good nursery supports it carefully.

They’re growing more independent

Small steps towards independence — feeding themselves, attempting to put on shoes, showing you what they want — all point to a child who is ready to explore and try new things. Nursery builds beautifully on this growing sense of “I can do it myself.”

They have the energy and curiosity for more
