    Chess

At Annemount School chess is taught from Year One.

Initially the children familiarise themselves with the different pieces and how they interact together. This progresses through to Year Two by learning various strategies to develop strategic thinking. They learn to utilise various tactics to gain advantages and how to checkmate their opponent.

Chess teaches a variety of useful skills to children. These include (but are not limited to) problem-solving, patience, competition, thinking ahead, learning to win and lose graciously, as well as patterns and other mathematical and cognitive skills.
